If you are a new mother and your baby is away due to health reasons immediately after birth you pump breastmilk within 6 hours of your baby’s birth.

If you are planning to return to work after maternity leave or spend time away from your baby due to other commitments, it is suggested that you start pumping 3 to 4 weeks before returning to work. This will give you time to see how the pump works, initiate the pumping, and get comfortable with it while you build a freezer stash of expressed breast milk.

Most babies breastfeed about 8 to 12 times every day. Pumping should closely resemble the same pattern of feeding.

If you are pumping exclusively

It is best to pump 8-12 times in 24 hours – every 2-3 hours during the day, and at least once at night.

If your baby is younger than 6 months old and you're away

Pump every 3 hours to maintain your supply. You can pump when your breasts are full, it is ok to pump more frequently than what you planned initially.

If you have a low milk supply

Pump every 3 hours around the clock or at least 8 times in 24 hours until you have a good milk supply.
